Odd question. Are you asking for types of wine, brands, or vintages?
California is NOT the best of the best.
When you hear someone say "Oh, that was a good year", they are talking about Bourdeaux. That's the wine-growing region in France upon which every other wine in the world is compared.
When Bourdeaux has a great year, as they did in 2000, new bottles from their premier cru chateaux go for between 300 and 500 bucks PER BOTTLE and you aren't supposed to drink them for at LEAST a decade… maybe more, by which time, a single bottle will retail for 2-5 grand or more! Compare that to the 60 bucks a bottle for most good wines, or the 120 a bottle for most great wines.
So the answer I'm providing is: it's a region, not a company. It's likely that you can find 10k bottles of wine at auction that have something unusual about them, but most of those come from Bourdeaux ANYWAY and the ones that don't are some sort of odd thing like one of only four bottles this year grown in Bill Gates' back yard, then smuggled out without him knowing about it, filtered and bottled by his gardener and his tailor.
Crazy bottles can go for a lot of money due to being crazy, but in terms of pure quality leading to high pricing, Bourdeaux is the answer you seek.
